A Prayer for One Who Has Lost a Spouse

A welcoming prayer for the widow or widower seeking comfort, strength, and God's presence in the loneliness of grief.

Lord, the empty chair beside me stays empty. The silence of the house weighs in a way no words explain. I come to You because the grief of widowhood has its own rhythm: there are days when longing tightens the chest and nights when sleep will not come.

You do not ask me to be strong all the time. Welcome my weariness, the tears that arrive without warning, the mornings when rising feels impossible. Hold in Your heart the story we built, the small gestures, the love that does not end with departure.

When loneliness seems larger than I am, remind me that You are here. Give me courage to tend what remains: the house, the practical decisions, the children or grandchildren, my own heart. Teach me to ask for help without shame and to accept the kindness of those who want to walk with me.

Father, let Your peace not be a distant promise but the ground I walk on today. Sustain me in what is urgent and teach me to live one day at a time, with the certainty that the love we shared remains in You. Amen.
