How to study the Psalms

A simple way to read the Psalms as prayer, lament, gratitude, and hope.

The Psalms give words to many experiences: joy, fear, repentance, indignation, gratitude, and waiting. You do not have to read every Psalm as a celebration. Some teach us to rejoice; others teach us to lament before God without abandoning hope.

Read the whole Psalm

Notice who speaks, to whom they speak, and how the tone changes. Then turn one phrase into a personal prayer. If the text mentions an enemy, do not use it to feed revenge; bring the pain to God and seek justice and protection.

A good practice is to stay with one Psalm for a week. Read slowly, write what it reveals about your reality, and end with an act of care.
