Prayer for the Poor

An original prayer to awaken compassion and live as a community alongside those who have little.

Lord, who knows every winding path and every closed door, tilt the heart of this world toward those who today lack what they need.

We see those who go hungry while others eat too much, those who seek shelter in the shadow of walls, those who wake without knowing where tomorrow's bread will come from. We do not look far away: we look nearby, where poverty often knocks on our own door or appears on a neighbor's face.

Teach us to recognize Your face in those who have nothing. May compassion not be merely a feeling but a firm step forward — the giver who gives without seeking recognition, the one who offers a cup of water without counting the cost, the one who sets an extra plate without asking for a surname.

Give us courage to question the paths that leave someone behind, and the humility to learn from those who suffer without complaint. May our community not be a group that keeps itself safe, but an outstretched hand.

And when we do not know what to do, remind us that every small gesture — to listen, to share, to welcome — is already a seed of Your presence. May Your love make a path among us, so that no one remains alone.

Amen.
